exhaust manifold temperature question

What is the normal exhaust manifold temperature range for a stock 1970 440 six pack at idle? My infrared thermometer only goes to 500 degrees and the temp heads north of that. I am thinking it should be around 270 degrees.

combustion temps can be 1800* f under load but even at idle I bet you are 1200 + in the cylinder so 500+ warmed up 2 " away from the cylinder is very likely . I know it is an instant 3rd degree burn

Thanks for the information. I know what you mean, I burned a hole in my hooded top right at belly level when running the engine on its run stand.
