FAST EFI external fuel pump: LOUD!!!
« on: July 10, 2014 - 08:48:32 PM »
Folks:  Im running the older version FAST EFI in my 71 Cuda w/440:   I love the FI system, and it has served me well over the past couple years.

But I do have one major complaint:  The FAST inline external electric fuel pump is LOUD. And it seems to have gotten even louder this year. There are very few places to mount the pump as it must be below the level of the fuel tank to operate properly.

Right now its mounted on the rail that sits just in front of the gas tank, that sits just above the rear differential.  To me, it was about the only place to  feasebly mount the darn thing where the pump sat below the level of the gas tank.

And from day one, it had been loud:  But it seems to be getting louder. I mean teeth grinding loud

For me, at this time, an in-tank pump is not in my budget.  Besides, my current external pump works fine, but it is loud

So what is a solution?

-Is there another suggested place where I could mount it where the noise in the cabin isnt so loud?

-Is the only option to but an quieter pump?

-Is the pump getting louder because it is getting ready to fail?
(My FAST fuel filters I changed out this spring for S and G's, but that did not seem to change anything)

What I've done is use a small low pressure in-tank pump to feed the high pressure pump, that frees up the location of the HP pump...   As far as a source for the low pressure pump Ford used small pumps that can be installed through stock sending unit hole.... Take a look at  AIRTEX Part # E2484 $35 from Rock Auto & works great...

though mounted to frame, is it sound insulated, like mounted through some
rubber or something.

They got new systems where the high pressure pump is in the engine compartment, fed
by the normal low pressure pump.

Talk with the manufacturer tech people.

Killer-Mopar:

Great response.  I appreciate the info as well in your original post regarding TankInc.com.

I went to site and was quickly pressed: The options available and the int fuel pump options are great.  Even have appropriate fuel gauge senders
Unfortunately you have to find a dealer near you.  I was fortunate as they had a parts store up NE Denver, maybe an hours drive from home, that sells  tanksinc products

I contacted that store, great salesman on the phone. He is going to take my preferred options and get me a total for an order

Im looking at:

1. '71 Cuda, "stock" type gas tank setup with internal fuel pump, includes fuel gauge sender, tank straps, etc.

OR

2. Their black, poly, fuel cell type 14 Gallon setups, interior fuel pump, sender, strap

I'm thinking (hope) I can get a complete FI tank set up for around 350-450 dollars

If thats the case, not too bad, considering a quality brand internal fuel pump alone would go for about 250-300 in itself
