the regulator and return line seem like kinda a pain,
There isn't a return line, just a regulator. Once the reg is set (one time), your good to go.
At least with a Mallory 4110 that I use.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

I have a Mallory that I bought sometime n the early 90s. I can't remember the model but I don't use a regulator with it and it feeds my 440 just fine.
I may be schizophrenic,
but at least I have each other

When I replaced all my fuel lines I put in a return behind my block with a Mallory 4110 mounted under the trunk and no regulator, just a pressure meter that reads 7 psi consistently.

Bad placement for the fuel line !!
Any clutch or converter / flex plate issues & the line could get cut !
