Clean Positive Power Source
« on: August 10, 2014 - 03:07:01 PM »
My Holley fuel injection has one more wire to hook up and I can't figure out where it goes. The engine builder had it labeled as "POS coil" when they ran the engine.

The Holley instructions say it needs to be "switched" power meaning only hot when the key is "on" and no power when the key is "off" HOWEVER....and here's the kicker....power MUST remain constant while the key is in the "cranking" position. Every wire I find under the dash goes out while cranking... :pullinghair: Holley instructions say "CLEAN power source" not like the coil :grinno:

Any ideas ?

Why not wire in a relay that is triggered by the positive coil wire.

Relay wiring, terminal 30 battery power(constant), terminal 87 to fuel inj. unit, terminal 85 ground, terminal 86 coil positive ( before resistor if using one). The 86 terminal only pulls a set of points together to connect terminals 30 and 87, very little current draw. Hope this helps.

'cause I have no idea what you're talking about.... :clueless:

I'm a "stock original" guy..... just trying to follow directions supplied by Holley.....It doesn't say anything about having to wire in an extra relay :pullinghair:.....I don't get it... :banghead:

Yea wiring can be frustrating, thats why I do so much. The coil wire will have power always when the switch is anywhere but off or accessory. Think of the relay as nothing more than a switch that is sending direct battery current directly to wherever ( electric fans, A/C comp., ) anything that draws current. It takes the load off of the trigger for that part. Can't tell you how many toggle switches I have seen burned up by people using them for fans or fuel pumps without going thru a relay. Hope this helps.

Just thinking, the Holley might already have a relay, any way you can post the wiring diagram ? Or give me part number of the system, I can look up the diagram. I love wiring  :cooldancing:

There is no diagram either. Instructions are here. https://ac17cb7e3cc3506f0d23-7386afb7d61f5e5af0e5a817d2877bfe.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/199r10653rev3.pdf  The wire I'm having problems with is talked about on the top of page 12. "12V switched"

I've been concentrating my efforts inside the car until now. Going through the factory service manual I realize the wire at the coil comes from the ballast resistor.

So I just tested the one side of the ballast resistor and sure enough it has keyed power and power during cranking.

Would it be considered dirty ? I just I should check it for volts as well....I was just using a test light.

That is exactly what I would suggest , hit the blue & brown wire either at the base of the column or at the ballast which is the next stop / point to get bith

:iagree:
If you need the crank/run power source in the engine compartment, take it from the brown and blue wires at the ballast, if you need the source under the dash, you will need to splice into those wires after the column connector.
