James Hylton Nascar Daytona at Carlisle 2015
« on: July 13, 2015 - 04:16:28 PM »
This year at Carlisle amongst all the polished perfection my attention was drawn to a rusty hull proudly displayed in the covered building. It was one of my favourite cars at the show this year. While taking pictures of the suspension the owner ( I assume?) came over to see why I was so interested in the suspension. We struck up a conversation and he invited me to jump over the roped off area to talk and take more pictures.  I forget his name but he seemed to be a nice guy!
My interest was to see what they ran suspension wise back in the day but this car had been "run hard and put away wet " as the saying goes.
I assume it was sold off at some point and continued to be raced in ASA of lower divisions so a few people had added to it so it seemed over the years. The stock torsion bar cross member was gone and replaced with square tubing and bolt in c-body torsion bar sockets. The lower control arms and spindle, lower ball joint also appeared to be c-body. (Actually I picked up a NOS passenger side lower control arm for this car at the swap meet) The drag link/center link was simply a round bar with shock eyes and gussets welded to it.  :22yikes:
The owners tell me someone died in a crash with this car as the upper cage had been cut out and welded back in? It also had 68 Charger quarters on it and no rear window plug. C-Body front spindles and disc brakes were also added at some point. K-Frame construction I found interesting too! :grinyes:

The front frame rail and upper control arms has been replaced with square tubing and fabbed mounts at some point too, "battle damage" over the years I assume?  The strut rods were the standard Nascar Dodge screw in ball joint with adjusters. It's a long way from how it was in 1969/70 but a cool piece of racing history just the sameCool stuff all in all to someone who has spent a few years in the circle track crowd. I figured HP2 and a couple others would enjoy a few pictures....

that is such an awesome car!   Sits on a pedestal in my book.  Love those race cars.

From what I've seen of " what's left" it will be more of a re-creation than a restoration, but very cool just the same! :2thumbs:
Basically you have a roll cage, rear clip and k-frame, maybe the nosecone, the rest....... :-\
The front suspension on it now is not " correct" for how it ran in Nascar.
