which axles?
« on: July 23, 2014 - 07:57:32 AM »
Got a rear disc conversion kit for my 74 satellite. Has directions for 1 piece and 2 piece axles. How do I tell which I have?

Directions are quite vague lol. It's an 8 3/4 rear if it makes any difference.

The kit is from summit racing, says it's an 8 3/4 disc conversion kit. Wonder if they thought some might put it on an 8 3/4 front axle. Meaning if it had cv axles (rather than a solid axle), some might consider it a 2 piece axle shaft.

To my knowledge they never made a 8 3/4 CV axle or anything exotic like that.  Read the instructions for each and see what the difference is between the one piece and two piece setup.  Like Alan said, it might be referring to the bearings, such as factory or the Green bearing replacements.

For one it says to remove the center axle nut to pull out the axle. For the other it says to remove 5 bolts to pull out the axle. Different re-assembly instructions depending on what you have as well.

Up until 63 the 8 3/4 had 2 piece axles , there was a nut on the end & the flange was removable / keyed , pian in the a$$ to work on , 64 up used 1 piece axles
