Trunk lid torsion bars removal

Very carefully....or they will bite!

I use a long scew driver and pray it off the hook, then it come apart reather easily.

We used to use a long 3/8" extension and put the end into the female side. Wear gloves, hold them together and take it easy and they'll come out easy. Note their orientation and notch position before you remove them. Pics are your friend.

If you have a nice painted trunk you want to protect, use some towels around the area when you pop off the bars so you won't tag your paint.

After studying this carefully, consulting the shop manual (not much help), discarding the idea of a long pry bar and running like hell  I figured out the procedure. Actually quite simple and safe. I removed the trunk lid hinges first. At this point there is still some tension but not much. Then at the top of the bar where it bends to go to the other side of the car you pull up, slide slightly back and push down and forward. Tension gone, bar comes right out, no blood, no scratched paint.  Pretty cool the way it was designed.

  I never thought about removing the trunk hinges...

Thanks for the tip......I will use it the next time I have to remove the torsion bars.
