Hemi 4-speed
« on: August 30, 2014 - 09:05:40 PM »
Need some advice/tips for a continuing problem. My 4-speed transmission has a slight oil leak where the reverse indicator switch is located. I have had issues with this switches plug coming loose in the past and not allowing the indicator lamp under the dash to work properly. I would think that the plug would snap into place with a somewhat positive locking sound like a snap or click but it just slides into place. The last time I worked on the switch/plug I put a small worm clamp around the plug to keep it in place--the indicator light still works but now I have developed a small oil drip. Are these switch/plugs available OEM or aftermarket? Any tips on how to repair the oil leak? Any tips on retaining the plug? Thanks in advance. :burnout:

Mopar has new switches , the new ones are far better as the originals would leak though the rivets in the bakelite ,  new ones are molded plastic , nowhere to leak through , the plugs get hard & do not seat on the switch well , you could silicone the boot on

Thanks Chryco. Found one of the new styles on eBay--buy it now--it's on the way. Is the female plug available somewhere?

Got my new switch. Got the car up on my hoist and started the repair job. Got a couple of questions.
1.  When I started draining the trans oil I heard the sound of air sucking in somewhere. Tail shaft seal? Any ideas what I should look at?
2.  Found a small seep around the reverse ball detent assembly (below the backup switch) and decided to take it out and try to fix that leak as well. Pulled the small plug/cap then pulled the spring. Removed the larger part of the assembly CAREFULLY and found a hollow tube. Should the ball have been captured in the tube and come out with the tube or is it missing or still down in the hole. I looked in my service manual and the diagram shows the ball below the tube not above the tube like it inserts from above and is held inside the tube. The service manual doesn't say much about this part other than torque values. I reassembled the parts with "O" rings rather than gaskets hoping for a more permanent solution to the oil seeps. Are there any clearance settings for these parts? Will probably wait to hear opinions from you guys before I refill the trans. :burnout:

If the car was not in reverse when you tried to take the ball out the ball will fall into the tranny. If the tranny is in reverse use a magnet to get the ball out.

OK here is the deal. Trans was NOT in reverse when the reverse detent ball assembly was removed. I was able to fish the ball out of the hole with a magnet. Ready to go back together and was wondering if the trans needs to be in reverse before reassembly. Would the following be the correct process? Shift into reverse--install the ball detent housing--torque housing--drop in the ball--install spring--install cap--torque cap. Thanks in advance.
