Question about "numbers matching"
« on: September 23, 2014 - 10:24:27 AM »
Hope this subject has not been beaten to death in past posts but I am curious if anyone knows if a car right off the dealer  showroom floor is 100% EXACT number matching, or are some date codes close but not exact?

For example, if a person bought a brand new Dodge Challenger RT/SE 440- Six Pack, auto tranny, etc. off of the showroom floor in 1970 and checked the date codes that were stamped on all 3 carbs, exhaust manifolds, radiator, distributor, engine block, tranny, etc. would all of those date codes be identical? Or would some codes be close but not exact?

No they woulds not be identical....that's impossible. They could be within a 90 day range at best...Parts are date coded as they are manufactured. You think the guy making the carburetor has to do it on the same day the guy making the rad does ? :screwy: These parts are out sourced and shipped to Chrysler from all over North America.

even the carbs would be delivered in batches so a 6 pack might have 3 different but similar date codes on a set of correct carbs on one engine

thanks, I was hoping you would say that and it makes sense, the reason I asked is that my 2 outboard carbs match exactly with their date codes, but my center carb is a 197. I managed to find a 1970 center carb just 6 days away from the dates on the outboards
