yellow 71 cuda should use what color primer?

hello all,
in process to begin painting a 71 cuda with a "school bus like" yellow PPG color, up this day we have never used any primer color but PPG DP50LF (gray) my question is with this yellow color should I be using a red or white primer instead of gray?

Also what color primer did factory use with for yellow base colors?

I'm not a paint expert but I am painting my Cuda the same color as you.
I used the gray high build primer, sanded to 400 grit.
Then Base coat white, base coat yellow, then clear.
A 2 gallon kit of PPG Omni white was $134 gal, with the reducer another $30, but that makes 2 gal total.
 I figured that was cheaper than buying a white primer.

I used a gray epoxy and a darker gray high build.

When I painted my 73 yellow I had to put on a few extra coats of paint to get good coverage. Are you going to use a primer sealer before the color? If you are check to see if they can tint that yellow.

I`ve never bought into the myth that primer color changes the final color hue, if you get 100% coverage with the paint the primer does not show thru. Maybe someone out there can prove me wrong?

I would  use a white sealer.

Primer color wont change the color it will just be easier to cover the primer. I was told by the Glassurit rep that yellow was one on the colors that is hard to get good coverage. I remember when I painted my Cuda, even though I was putting a vinyl top on I painted the roof and with 3 coats of color it looked like crap until I put on 2 more coats like the rep told me. Look great after that for what its worth.

The lighter the primer, the better. However, adequate paint coverage shouldn't really change the outcome. It's really only a big deal with candies. Then again, with candies, you should have adequate base coverage that it shouldn't matter.

Yellow primers/sealers can be done.

I've seen them before. My car had it done.

Most paint supply places can mix or sell you some yellow coloring for your primer of choice. That way if you do get a chip in your paint you wont see gray primer at your chip

I believe all cars...no matter what color they were getting painted...got a coat of red oxide primer.
