let off the clutch, car moves when in gear
« on: September 19, 2014 - 08:30:38 AM »
When I let off the clutch and the car is in gear, whether forward or reverse, the car starts to move in that direction with some force, much faster than it should. What is causing it to do this?

I'm also noticing that the clutch fan sounds a bit louder than it should be at idle and while coasting. While on the throttle it calms but once I come to a stop light and engage the clutch the idle goes up and the fan sounds like it's moving way too fast.

The throttle cable was stuck and not closing all the way so I figured that may be causing the issue but fixing it did not solve this issue.

What's the reasoning behind that?

Dave, the reason it moves with force and faster than it should is because it's a Mopar  :burnout: You wouldn't happen to be a former Chevy owner would you  :roflsmiley:  :smilielol:

Haha I have owned a few Chevy's...but it's almost as if I couldn't stall it in gear if I wanted to.

When I'm cruising, if I left off the gas it seems to hang up at speed and will not come down almost as if the throttle is stuck. When I come to a stop and it's idling, immediately the clutch fan gets louder and fast

Sounds to me that your "idle" speed is to high. What RPM is it? Should be about 750.
If you can't lower with timing or carb adjustment I would surmise you have a vacuum leak.

Sound like your spring setup for your throttle is sticking or your idle is too high.

As for your clutch - are you saying it engages too fast (adjustment) or this is just because the idle is too high?

Most likely the latter.

I'm thinking it's because of the idle being too high also. I don't have an exact reading, need to wire in a tach.

I have a stock carter 2bbl with the 2 idle adjustment screws on the backside on the drivers side. The one closest to the fenderwell is the curb idle and the other is fast idle correct?

I've read I can use a vacuum gauge to set my idle by hooking into the PCV, adjusting idle screws until I get my highest vacuum gauge then back them down a 1/4 turn. Is this a good way to achieve this without a tach?

The fast idles screw will ride against a cam that moves with the choke door , base idle rides against a stop that will not move .
Manifold vacuum can be used to adjust idle mix setting leaning it 1/4 turn may be too lean but it will get you into the zone

For more clarification, the fast idle is the speed that the engine starts at to get it up to running speed? The curb idle is what the engine settles down to? So if I'm idling too high at idle after it comes down from the intial, is my curb idle off or do both need to be adjusted?

Fast idle is only on when the engine is started cold & the choke is on , at any other time it should drop down to base idle speed immediately , sometimes the gasket under the carb can interfere with the throttle blades so check that , something seems to be holding the idle speed up , if you have to remove the carb & makes sure it snaps fully closed off the engine , if it does it has to be a problem with the choke , gasket , return spring etc

I re-adjusted the throttle cable, tweaked the timing and the curb idle screw and it's idling and feels a lot better now. Thanks for the help guys  :2thumbs:
