Too Much Torque Converter
« on: October 08, 2014 - 11:18:58 AM »
Found what looks like a new torque converter in my father's basement still in box.  It's a TCI 24 splines.  Model # is 1422 "Street Fighter".  I am told it is a 3000-3600 RPM Stall.  Fits a 1967-81.

I am rebuilding his 72 Challenger 340 Rallye with stroker kit to 416.  It has the original 727 we have rebuilt and 8 3/4 rear end 323 we have rebuilt.  Have not picked the Cam yet.

Car is being rebuilt for street and cruising.

Question:  Is this too much for this car?  Not educated on what it will do.  Always learning.

Thanks.

With the 3.23's it is probably too much.  You don't want your cruising RPM to be lower then the convertors stall.  I've got a Hughes 10" 3500 stall that I think I'm going to use in the beginning.  I already have it so it won't add to the initial cost of the build.  I'll have some fun around town for awhile but will probably change to something lower.

:iagree:  I have 3.55's in my 727 with a stroked 360 to 408ci and running a 2200-2800 ACC converter and it runs perfect.  I think 3.23 gears and bumping the converter to 3000+ would not work as well.

Okay so I narrowed it down to (3) options.
1.  Hughes 2200-2500 stall
2.  B&M 2300-2500 stall
3.  TCI (It's called the Breakaway close to the above stall)

Hughes and B&M close in price where TCI is $80.00 more.

Is there one preferred over the other for my re-build?  Or maybe I'm missing a secret weapon.

Thanks for any help.

IMO, a custom tailored converter is well worth the money and worth investigating.

I had an off the shelf converter that worked okay with my 318. I was told and told to go with something custom and I finally caved.

I went to a 9.5" Dynamic that was tweaked to my setup and the car was dramatically different, completely woke up the car. It also cruised at similar to stock RPM when not under load and would flash to 3600rpm or so when I pinned it.

A converter can make or break a setup, take a look into a custom tweaked converter for your car... I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Send me an email with your home email address and I'll send you a spec. sheet for you to order your converter.  Supplier your choice of course.  A converter should be matched FOR YOUR APPLICATION.  What works in one guys car doesn't mean it will work the same in your car.  Off the shelf units typically fine for little more than stock engine output, but may not work for you.  Any converter supplier that fails to ask these questions, RUN FROM.  Your camshaft supplier will also give you recommendations for a stall converter.

Prior to retiring, I worked in the converter industry.  I've seen many a converter that were poorly made.  A matched converter to your car is a great investment in performance, while a poorly matched converter is a waste of your time and money.
