Desperate to trace my cars past owners/history
« on: July 26, 2015 - 07:41:53 AM »
Hi Guys, I am trying to get advice on tracing the history and owners on my '71 challenger she is a 318ci with 904 torqueflite. An original plum crazy car with vinyl top and should have a white accent stripe. The vin is JH23G1B424082. all I know is it was registered in the UK about 1976, so must have got here before that and I believe came over with a serving officer ( I don't think privates were allowed to bring cars with them). As you know online searches are useless for vin history, so I am putting this thread up to see if you guys have any idea's. I would dearly love to trace the history, while I am dealing with an ongoing a health problem. With some old paperwork I found reference to a number on the registration form NB7202 ,what this means I don't know. There should be a picture on here too. I look forward to any help or advise anyone might be able to offer me.

Hi, In the USA is a man by the name of Galen Glavier  galengovier.com/registry.htm. He does this for a living plus other things. He might be able to help you. Sorry you're having health issues. Good luck on your search.
regards, Barry

It's very difficult to get any information like that.  Used to be somewhat easier, but due to privacy laws the states aren't allowed to divulge information on title and registration history to civilians now I don't think.  I tried to trace the history of my T/A Challenger in the late 90s and at the time, my state, Illinois, for small fee, would send you copies of the title history of your car. I found they didn't keep records for any car where the title hadn't been changed in 7 years, and I'd had my car close to 20 years at the time.  So no luck for me! I got my original sales paperwork on the car since it was sold by Mr Norms dealership and those records still exist and can be purchased.  I tried to trace the original owner, and found an address near my town, but appeared I just missed him. Phone had been disconnected and a letter with a SASE to his address never came back.
Only law enforcement can get title and registration records like that now, like the FBI and the police.  If you know someone in US law enforcement, they may be able to help you.  However, they are risking getting in trouble for doing something like that for non-official use, so don't count on that either.
Your best bet is Barry Washington of the Hamtramck registry.  He tries to document information on as many cars as he can and is very helpful-

Galen Govier keeps a registry, but he is hard to contact, charges for his time, and usually considers his time too valuable for anyone but his wealthy clients and talking about cars that didn't originally come with hemis or wings.

Was the car an export ordered car?

Please post the fender tag information.    That could help.

Not an export, I'm guessing that G09 is actually 609.. It's in the SPD location so the letter choices are A,B or C.. Or the numbers 1-9... 609 is a June 9th 1971 SPD which fits with the 424082 VIN

Good luck in your quest... I would put much faith in Galen... If it were a Hemi you'd have a shot... a 318 not so much...

wild, did you mean you "wouldn't" put much faith in galen?  Since it's a 318.

V1y must be V1X  as I doubt your plumb crazy with a white stripe came with a gold vinyl top.

It means it you have a liquid cooled wallet Galen might find time in his busy schedule to fit you in.... If your of average means & have something unusually cool he might fit in a few minutes for you... If you have a 318 Challenger you probably aren't going to get much help...

Note to self do not type when tired and without glasses :screwy:
Yes it is 609 and again it is V1X mind you that would have made her one of one. I have emailed barry too now so lets see. I am hoping the more it's on the net someone may see the threads and jog some memories
