Working on my console today and decided to see if I could do anything with the piano hinge for the compartment. It had some brown (iron oxide) corrosion that looks like what you get with chrome plated steel. The good part looks like chrome.
There was also a lot of grayish corrosion that looks like corroded zinc.
So I decided to try polishing it. I used 320, 800, 1000, 2000 grit paper then buffed with 3 grades of compound. The finish is even and consistent looking like polished stainless steel. What the heck is it made of?
