Hemi brakes question, for Hemi owners
« on: October 31, 2014 - 05:07:37 PM »
As we get deeper into the build I'm thinking about the brakes. We have already converted the front drums to disc and the dana 60 will have 11 inch drums. As I search for a booster/master combo for it I'm coming up short. But I looked at some previous posts on the subject and found many feel the manual brakes (ie no booster) works good, and better pedal feel. Not sure how much vacuum the motor will be pulling, guessing around 11 to 13 inches. Personally I prefer manual brakes but looking for  :feedback: Not really interested in hydra boost either.

I have manual disc front and 11 inch drums on a dana in the back for my 440/6 and I think the brakes work awesome. Great pedal feel and I have had to slam them on hard on a few occasions and was really impressed for what they are.  :dunno:

Thanks badfish, I'm leaning toward manual brakes, I like the pedal feel of them. But Toxicwolf thinks we'll get killed  :roflsmiley:

We decided on manual disc/drum today. So in shopping for a master cylinder was the master different for a Hemi like it was on power brake cars ? I found this on Summit , application says all with manual disc/drum.  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rsd-g1501/applications/year/1970/make/dodge/model/challenger?prefilter=1  Also want a correct proportioning valve. Thanks in advance.

Roadman - if you have power steering why not consider hydrabost unless you are looking for the stock look. All one has to do is ask those who have converted over to HB if they would go back. Ans = never. These cars accelerate so fast now it is nice to stop them fast as well. My HB with Cordoba front discs would pull down hard from over 100mph where one thought they were going to hit the dash. Now I have converted to Viper front system but no road test yet.

Thanks 73E, yes were looking for stock look. She won't be a trailer queen by any means, but driving will probably to cruises, shows, etc. If we get any real heavy hi po driving in it will be limited.  Found the prop valve and thinking the Summit master cyl.
