Dying or painting panels
« on: May 02, 2005 - 06:01:39 AM »
Got a couple of questions for you guys,
My 72 Challengers door panels etc have all been painted black by previous owner(looks like they were a cream color originally) well now the paint is flaking off and it looks bad, so what's the best way to remove all the paint from the plastic?
Then I'm thinking of dying them black instead of repainting them, Does this look good or would I be better just repainting them?
If I dye them what dye should I use, and what's the best way to do it, or If painting them is better what paint should I use so it looks good.

Also what color paint is used for the lower part of the dash that's metal?

Evil, I used paint on my pannels but this is the first set I've done and not sure how well they'll hold up. I think Rev and Redline used a dye and can probably tell you better as to what kind to use. I used glass bead on LOW air pressure to clean mine followed by a degreaser cleaner. As for the metal dash you can use a satin black for that.

Hey Evil!  We dyed all of our panels, but they were not painted over...they were just old and ugly.  We used SEM products to do the dye job.  There are 4 steps to go through, but it was really pretty easy...just cleaning and spraying.  They really turned out great.  Here's our webpage on our plastics...  http://our70challenger.moparpages.com/html/plastics.html

Hope this helps.
