How to Remove a solid pulley for Saginaw Power Steering Pump
« on: February 01, 2015 - 04:37:20 PM »
I have a Saginaw power steering pump with solid pulley.  I can clamp the pulley down on the vise to remove it but it will destroy the pulley.  What is the best method to remove and install the pulley without damaging it???  Would it be best to replace it with one having holes?  That way I can put a screwdriver through it to stop it from spinning.  I'd prefer to keep the original pulley though!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

Thanks for your replies.  Sorry for the confusion.  I have the puller set so let me clarify my question...

The pulley spins when I try to remove the retaining nut before I can use the pulley remover.  What is the best method to hold the pulley still while the nut is being removed (or installed) so the pulley doesn't spin?  Thanks.

I would try a good impact gun but not an air ratchet.

Yup, Impact, if it has a nut you won't need a puller...

Thanks All! Using an impact gun worked!  :)

FYI, I still had to use a puller to remove the pulley once the nut was off.
