440 w/stage 5 heads
« on: July 27, 2002 - 11:39:24 PM »
i saw a 70 cuda w/shaker hood and 426 emblems(not factory) this last week at a show :o  the guy had a nice looking car and alot of lookers so i didn't bug him but someone asked about his engine and he said it was a roller engine w/stage 5 heads on top of a 440 block...my question is can someone just bolt these heads on a 440 and go? or are there anymore modifications that NEED to be done?

These  have been around for at least 12 years , their product/quality is excellent & user friendly. They are virtually bolt on but require the block to be modified for pushrod clearance for the exhaust valves, this can be done with a die grinder by hand as long as you are careful, there is also a modification to the block to return oil from the heads as the 440 block does not have the provision for oil return that the Hemi blocks do have but it is a simple modification with external lines.
The engine will also need a special Hemi cam as the timing is different from the wedge, the conversion is not cheap but will be cheaper than buying a Hemi  ;)

thanks!.. any idea how much needs to be ground off for pushrod clearance? also on the external lines is this for oiling the heads better? where does the line come from at the block also does it go to the heads? two seperate lines then? or? i have never ridden in a hemi car or a six pac  :'(  but have heard its the ride of your life! i also heard this guy say he couldn't use full throttle untill he was really going cause the car is so squirrely, he estimated the hp at 625 at the whls. never dyno'd though

The notches for the pushrods are outlined with the heads but I believe they are about 3/8" deep & about 1 1/2 " long at the deck where the head bolts on to allow the pushrod to lean over far enough to align with the exhaust rocker.
The oil lines are for return to the pan only , the rocker shafts oil from the stock location but the oil gets trapped at the outside edge of the Hemi heads, the Hemi blocks had a return passage cast on the front of the engine clearly visible on the outside of the block on the left side in front of the water jacket  to return the oil to the pan , the 440 blocks don`t have this provision so they need the external lines. ;)
