K-Member Bolt Threads Question
« on: December 08, 2014 - 08:47:47 PM »
Hello everyone.  I've removed my whole front suspension including K-member to clean up and paint.  I want to clean up the K-member bolt threads.

Can someone tell me what size bolt and threads those 4 bolts are so I can run a tap into them to clean them up before re-installing the K-member?

Thanks!

Do you have a picture of which bolt holes you are talking about?

Why do you need to clean the threads up?
It's not like they've been re used a 100 times right?

They're a tight fit and as long as they're not stripped, you shouldn't be having any issues.

Some folk are just anal retentive.  I happen to clean threads on a regular basis for no better reason than to have clean threads.

I agree though, shouldn't have any issues anyway since they very rarely get removed.

I always clean and run a tap thru old threads, mainly to clean out rust and dirt. Also use new bolts when available, if not I run a die on the old ones. That way I have a good feel for tightening or torqueing on reassembly.  :2cents:  I'm just real picky.

These are the 4-bolt holes the K-member is bolted to in the vertical direction, sorry I don't have a photo.  The threads look dirty with one bolt hole thread looking slightly on the damaged side.  I guess this can be expected, especially since this is a 40+ year old car.  I like to clean out the threads on certain areas to make sure I don't have problems with reassembly.  I've been bit by that before with false torque readings and things loosening up later on.

So... that's why I'm trying to find out what size and thread the bolts are.  I have 4 new ones that Santa is going to deliver under the tree during Christmas.

Anyway, does anyone know by chance?

I'd say clean them, dump them in evaporust and then re-use them.

If there are pieces missing out of them ( I have a few) I would not use them.

Well as for the caged nuts in the frame grab a 3/4 in stainless steal bottle brush, and your choice of cleaner, the threads are very course so they clean pretty easy.
