Which fuel pump for my 318?
« on: December 11, 2014 - 08:58:28 PM »
My '74 Challenger has a '70 318 in it.

I assumed that the fuel pumps were all the same, but several vendors list a different part for the 70 and the 74.

Does anyone know what the differences are? Are they interchangeable? Maybe they are physically the same, but different delivery pressure? Port sizes?

Any help will be appreciated. I don't want to get the wrong one.

The only difference that I can think of is that the 70 may be the older Carter style that can be taken apart and rebuilt, while the later version may be the crimped together one that can't be rebuilt. There's lots of smarter guys on here and I'm sure one of them can give you a definitive answer.

some had threaded ports for the outlet , some were just hose nipples same as the suction side , some are clocked differently

So the geometry of the fuel pump lever and such is the same for all 318 LA engines, regardless of the year?

Thanks for the info.

Should be. Just make sure you get the pump arm under the eccentric. It'll make the pump body tilt away from the timing cover a bit at it's bottom when you first put it in, but once you get the bolts in and tightened, it'll pull up flat and tight. Don't get silly with the bolt torque as it's an aluminum cover you're screwing it to. A wee dab of sealant on the gasket wouldn't come amiss either.
