torque converter for 360cui
« on: December 27, 2014 - 06:31:55 AM »
i search a torque converter for my 360cui Barracuda .

The engine is buid 1972 , original was my Barracuda a 318
rear axel is a 8 3/4 sure grip with 3:55 and
mid comp cam , Holley 650cfm double pump 4bbl carb ,
a Weiand 7505 dual plane intake manifold ,
no name headers ( i search now for good one ) ,
MSD Ignition ( Box , Coil , Spark Plugs Wires )
the rest of the car are original .

Now the original factory torque converter will be installed but i want a other one
with more stall .
I want that my Barracuda become crisper and fire under his ass but also suitable for the street

Is a 2400 stall to much ? Which torque converter dimension will fit on a small block 10 " or 11 " ?

If I remember correctly  :clueless:  :clueless:  :clueless: 318 - 360 are balanced differently. 360 converter has weights 318 don't. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, haven't dealt with small blocks in a long time.

It`s correct , the 318 and the 360 are diffenrent balanced but I could only tell everyone what is reality .
At Factory my 1974 Barracuda was an 318 and one guy in california maybe think thats not the engine i want
and but an 1972 360cui engine in the Barracuda but that is not my question and should not be topic of
this thread !

Weights are only on the TQ converter on an externally balanced engine matched with the appropriate flexplate.  Internally balanced engines have a different flexplate and a TQ converter with no weights.  If it is an original '72 360 it is most likely an external balanced motor, but check the damper for weights to be sure.  I stroked a 360ci to 408ci and it was internally balanced with 465 HP and 495 TQ so I selected the ACC Performance 54092 converter.  www.accperformance.com/mopar-torque-converter-applications-and-pricing/

that`s a 12 " Converter , will this realy fit ?
I read everytime from 10" and 11" torque converters but I don`t know which one will be right
for an 360

2200 - 2800 stall will let his drive realy good ?

I think , the 360 is a external balanced torque .

Yep, here it is right before I installed the 727.  Good out of the hole and got up to 80 mph really quick.  I never did take it to the track so I don't have any official times for you.   :bricks1:

The converter should be matched to the cam , so you really need to know at what RPM the cam starts to work , you can determine this just driving it if you do not have specs for the cam , you should be able to feel where the engine is laboring & where it starts being snappy & responsive , the stall should be above the rpm where the engine feels strong .
10, 11 or 12" will work , just keep in mind that an engine with less torque will stall the converter at a lower RPM , you can order a converter with weights & cut them off if you do not need them for balancing

THX alot for the information and help

So , a Converter with 2200 stall will be enough and will work optimal when the cam have the right rpm range ,
that`s right ?
Next season i must take a look in which rpm range the power begin , that i know which comp cam could be
installed .

I had contact with an american Previous owners of the Barracuda but he don`t want tell me more about the car ,
what exactly will be installed

with the Holley 4bbl Carburator and the other performance parts i must have over 435 Nm and 280 DIN PS now .
But this Nm and PS are not been proven .
could be more but at first i must get this power better on the street and the torque converter will be the best way for this .

Send me an email to my home email  abc7@telus.net

I'll send back to you a specification sheet for you to fill out(honestly of course). Prior to retirement, I worked for a converter company and this was the sheet we used to select the proper converter for a customers needs.  Sometimes an off the shelf unit was used, sometimes a custom built unit was needed.  It all depended on the customers setup.
Give this to whomever you order your converter from and they will be able to supply you a converter with a stall speed that will match your engine/diff ratio/tire size combination.
Converters are made to fit.  Fitting a 8" converter or a 12" converter to your flex plate is not an issue, as the mounting is made to fit the flex plate.  Chrysler used both 11" and 12" converters in everything..
12" converters and 11" converters were both used behind 360 engines.

Don't let price be your only guide in buying a converter.  I've seen the insides of a lot of high stalls, and believe me there is a reason why some brands of converters are lower priced.

Whatever you do, avoid used converters as you never can tell what they are like inside or what they will do behind your engine.  At a swap meet, I saw a guy trying to sell what he said was a 3500 stall converter for a GM transmission.  It was one of ours and the part number on it was 35-12SS, which we made for GM TH350 transmissions.  We designed it to stall about 300-500 RPM over a stock unit.  The stock GM TH350 converter stalls at around 1400 RPM.

Also, to make things easier, you can buy a flex plate for your 360 that will take an internal balance converter and will leed you to a lot more future builds. Then your converter will work with external and internal balance depending on the flex plate used.  B&M TCI makes the plates and they are sfi approoved.   The flex plate you would use has a notch cut out of it for external balance engine and neutral converter
