soft seat bases
« on: January 06, 2015 - 01:46:07 AM »
Team, I have a 73 Cuda, the front buckets have very good vinyl on them, no cracks or holes and still soft, however, when we sit in either front seat, they are very soft and confortable, only a little too soft, the springs are not broken or damaged, the foam is old but not missing but when you sit in it man you sink. right now I have towels rolled up under the seat so as wehn I sit on it I can see over the steering wheel, im onoy 5'11", I have put 1" seat risers under the reat to lift the seat height but still id like the seats a lot firmer, how can this be done????

I took my seats to a furniture upholstry place and had them put more foam in the seat. They will know what type of foam to use. Just be careful not to put too much in. Your legs still need to fit under the steering wheel.

Replacing the springs can get really expensive.   :scared:

Thanks Guys,

The springs seem to be ok, they have not sagged, when no one is in the seat, the springs are nice and flat side to side per new basically, I'm 211 so a little on the heavy side, maybe the springs do need to be replaced with heavier duty????
I wonder where one goes to get them?

Thanks TW, I did some research today, I can buy the zigzag springs per meter in different wire diameter,  along with the metal clips etc, if you look at the pics on that ebay add, there is nothing tying the zigzag springs togeather in the middle so if you sit on them they just spread, maybe the factory seats are the same, if thats the case, I might be able to get thicker wire zigzag springs to replace the original and also tie them togeather to give a more firmer spring :dunno:  :dunno:

Sounds like a good idea.  May try that myself.

I had similar thoughts with my seats. New trims but very saggy.
I ended up adding 3 small crossbars  (15 X 2mm mild steel straps approx. 340mm long), just ziptied them across the base where they intersected all the springs, means the load is spread across all the springs more evenly, reduced the sag to a point I'm more comfortable with, I also added spacers to the seat mounts but could only fit around 16mm high as no more stud length on mounts. Will replace steering wheel down the track with smaller diameter to give more knee-space & hopefully move wheel closer to dash as well.
cheers...

Thanks guys, year Steve I'm only a short ass, have put blocks under the back of the seat as well as the rolled up towels, I can now see the fender top indicator on the passenger side!!! im also thinking of grabbing one of the MCB new Tuff wheels, not so much for leg room but smaller diameter and fatter feel.

Hope all is well

A good interior shop can add little brackets to tie all the springs together so they act as one structure.  It's not perfect but it helps.
