70 Cuda interior reassembly game plan
« on: January 30, 2015 - 04:10:56 AM »
:1zhelp: I was hoping to pick some brains for information. My 70 Cuda just came home from paint, and while there the body shop pulled the headliner bows out.So far I've gotten three out of what I believe should be five back.My questions are, being its been way to long the cars been apart,is there something that goes on the end of the bows before they go into the holes in the roof?Or do the rods just go in by themselves? And do the windows need to be out to install the headliner?Same for the drip rail molding WS and trim?Im trying to find some sort of order to reassemble the interior in so I can get started and I'm frozen up at the moment  :screwy: Everything I'm seeing looks like the window also needs to be out for the dash to be reinstalled also, although I saw an article somewhere that showed them pull the dash and reinstall it with glass in.I need to buy a new dash pad,but I'd rather put the glass in if possible until funds allow for the new pad. Thanks for any opinions.I guess overall I'm looking to see what the best order of putting the interior back together is.

I'm sure the headliner bows can go in without removing the windows. If the winshield is out of it now it will be a lot easier putting the dash and dashpad in first I would think. Doing the dashpad with the glass in you will need a flexible extension to get the screws that are up top at the very front of the pad in the blower vents.

Dash before windshield.

Dash before windshield is easier, however the dash can be installed with the windshield in already too.  Since neither are in, I would do the dash first.

I had my headliner replaced and the windshield and rear window did not come out. Unless the Cuda is different than the Challenger.  :dunno:

A good example is the Graveyard Cars shows.  They do a good job (sometimes) of showing the assembly process of the interior and glass is one of the last things to be put it.

If your bows are just straight at each end, you need little cups that clip into the ceiling sides

If the ends of the bows are bent outward, they go into holes on the ceiling sides.  For a '70, I would expect you have (or need) the cups.  You also should have  little skinny wires that connect the rear-most bow to the rear window frame. This is the first bow you install, and the wires keep the bow in place as you pull the fabric forward to make it taut.

It's tempting to just start assembling things when the car comes back from paint.  Resist the urge to just start assembling.  Things can be assembled in many different ways but if you just wait, and do things in the order the factory did, it will come together much easier.

Start with the headliner.  It's easiest if the glass is out and there are no other obstructions to move around inside the car.  Once the headliner is in, then install the interior metal trim around the back glass and secure the dome light/rear view mirror.  Don't install the metal trim at the top of the windshield or over the side windows just yet. Those pieces go on top of the A-pillar trim.  Next, move to the firewall insulation and upper dash insulation.  Then install the heater box and DS fresh air door.  Install the parking brake mechanism and the upper dash vent duct.(non A/C)

Now is the time to completely restore the dash.  Assemble it completely out of the car on a bench or a stand.  Once it's all together, install it in the car as an assembly.  Once the dash is installed, you can install the plastic A-pillar trim followed by the side window trim and the trim at the top of the windshield.

When I assembled my Challenger, the very last thing I had done was the glass.  If the car is housed inside a shop or garage, there is no need to do it right away. :2cents:

Thanks everyone  :worshippy. It does get tempting to start putting things in the car that you have on hand and not waiting.I'll check into headliners right now and maybe see about having it installed at my shop if i chicken out .Got this far, patience patience
