Black Oxide / Zinc-phosphate for nuts & bolts
« on: January 27, 2015 - 11:53:09 AM »
I have lots of hardware for suspension & brackets that needs to be plated (black oxide, zinc-phosphate, etc).  The parts don't need to be show-quality, but just have some level of protection that is not a paint coating.  What is a good DIY at-home solution for this?  Any suggestions for the Caswell and/or Eastwood kits?  Thanks!

Eastwood has a metal blackening kit....I could never get good results with it, and it requires a clear coat  :sadwavey:

I did this hood latch by soaking away the rust with phosphoric acid and if you leave it on it creates a dark grey coating, they say it protects from rust for up to a year.

on this hood latch I did only a 1/2 strength wash and then coated it with clear coat.

Try Brownells, they have small kits for DIY gun repairs, Phosphating is an easy process done at home,, very easy, temp is just short of boiling, one chemical mised with water, sit the items in it until they stop fizzing and done, spray with oil, good to go.

I powder coat my hardware. You can get a powder coating kit for under $100, hook it to a compressor and you will need a way of baking them to "set" the powder coat. My mothers old wall oven is perfect, I can fit 15"rims. Must be electric, no flame. They would also have to be blasted to clean metal first.

Here's a original master cylinder I powder coated, including the rod.
