Date Code?
« on: February 19, 2015 - 08:30:17 PM »
Not sure if this is the right place to put this. My apologies if not. While replacing my quarter panel I have come upon stampings in most of my panels that I assume are date stamps. Not for certain and was sure that somebody on here will know. On my trunk drop off I found L0D 105. On my outer wheel house I found L0D 161. Does anybody know how to decipher these? Are they date stamps? I was thinking L for left or D for driver side. :dunno:  So what do you guys know about this?

I worked in a stamping plant for 18 years. EVERY piece we stamped had some sort of number like that on it. Unfortunately 45 years later I don't think anybody could decipher it in my opinion.
When we did it, it could have included different things like "shift" or "stamping line" "part number" "date code" even "area" code or "group" code.....hundreds of different combinations....Half the time even working there we didn't know what they meant.

I'd be very surprised if anybody could nail down the exact meanings of those codes with 100% certainty :2cents:
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Bummer. Oh well, it's always cool to see this kind of stuff anyway. When I do the pass side next I'll see how the stamps are different if at all. Thanks Alan.

Every stamped piece of steel is coded.  OD is from the Overdrive road factory. Many stampings you will see ar SS and that is the the Starling Stamping plant. L or R will only be found where there is a left and right side of the same piece. the number is a sequence number and represent a batch with  quite high quantity. Sadly not even the  2000 pages collector bible ICCA, which is used to evaluate cars and restorations with all different date codes, gives away the exact sequence in time. One of my cars is a early October 69 production and has 08 another is from March 70 and has a 32. Beware the issue is sensitive because it is the only thing that gives away a car with a new body, wrong body or tag. Perhaps it is a well kept secret or perhaps someone here does in fact know  :naughty:  This is what i have found out so far.
Anders.
