Common repair parts
« on: February 20, 2015 - 01:17:13 AM »
What are some common repairs or weak spots we should be prepared for either on the roadside or otherwise?  My starter relay stopped working a little while ago so I was wondering what sort of other spare parts I should have around just incase and thought this might be a good thread topic...  Hoping for some interesting responses

My biggest breakdown so far was a valve cover basket giving away.

What do I keep with me in the car? Coolant, oil, transmission fluid, a worm clamp, RTV, ratchet set, ballast resistor, CAA membership. I try to keep patience too but that son of a b**ch is hard to find when you need it.

I agree a ballast resistor and if running electronic ignition an extra ignition module in the glove box. Other than that not much else. Although I am very picky about replacing belts, hoses and normal wear parts before they fail. It's hard to be prepared for every little problem that can pop up.

if no spare tire, fix a flat is handy in a pinch. small bottle jack instead of the factory jack to avoid complications (tip overs, damaging paint/chrome). small ammeter/circuit tester (esp if you are still running on the original wiring). a couple small mini-bottles of vodka or another high proof alcohol (good disinfectant 'just in case' or drinkable 'just in case' ....). I use an old military ammo can to store a lot of these things, small/compact and keeps the items safe from moisture damage.

On my Mopars it's always been starters and alternators, I have a box full of those in my garage, last time I counted 12 broken alternators in that box. One period in the 80's I always had a spare starter with me, I once changed it on the freeway in pouring rain with a PO'd girlfriend in the car... I think it was my headers that was tightly wrapped aound it, got too hot. 440 car. My alternator is broken right now!

A ballast resistor and an ignition control box, plyers, flat screwdriver. Any other problem will usually let you get home.

much of the above, plus a thick mat for lying on hot pavement and umbrella with a clamp handle for shade (for driving across the desert)...  cotter pins (the auto shifter linkage cotter pin gave way once).

A good woman with a strong back and good legs or good back and strong legs. Whichever you prefer for pushing.
