Differences between 1970 and 71+ parts....
« on: January 27, 2015 - 02:53:50 PM »
I knew there were a lot of differences in the sheet metal of 70 E Bodies etc...but I never realized how different some of the parts were. I'm confused, because once designed for a new 1970 platform, I'm surprised they would have changed what seems like meaningless parts :clueless: so early inproduction.

Here's some side by side shots of what I'm talking about. These are original parts to two V code Cudas. One with a build date of Oct. 11th 1969, the other, only 11 months later Sept 9th 1970.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Interesting Alan.

Can you point out which part is for which year in the pics you provided? This would come in handy for future inquiries.

Don't know how to "label" pictures;
So here it goes
Gas Pedals: top 71 - - - bottom 70
Pedal assembly: Left 71 - - - Right 70
E Brake: Left 70 - - - Right 71

It is a really interesting topic Alan! It does make one wonder why?? As to all the changes so soon. Below is a picture of my RT/SE SPD 802 of 1969. When the hood latch support bracket is compared to a newer one, it is easy to see the older ones had less pre-punched holes. Compare this to your cars Alan.

The emergency brake cable mounting brackets were different for 70 and 71 cudas as well.

Alan,
I guess this gets back to the question I had about the headlight bucket area on my fenders. Same year, one possibly replaced but definitely not a later year or the mounting brackets should have been different.  :clueless:
Maybe the engineering boys decided a change was needed midstream for some unknown reason, and they were working the bugs out all through the first model year?  :dunno: It does seem weird that they would change things in the middle of a production run unless there was a safety issue involved.
I guess when it comes to these cars you can never say 100% that it has to be "this way" to be correct.

"There's no such thing as putting a '70 AAR 'Cuda exactly where you want it. The 'Cuda isn't interested in such things, for they require finesse. Finesse asked the 'Cuda out to dinner once, but the 'Cuda stood it up to go drink beer under an overpass with her hot little sister. As far as this car is concerned, finesse can go stuff itself."

Ever looked at the small rear quarter window of a 70' vs. a 71' and on up?

Weatherstrips that go on can't be inter changed.
4speedfish and I discovered that out last summer.

Hmm that's interesting - Everything from what Alan mentioned to even the T style jack is different on these early cars.

It seems like they were using up floors and hardware from the late 60's.

It's not just the weatherstrip, it is the stainless trim too, the 1970 version is wider on the interior side, and it mounts with screws to the lower support frame, where the 71 & up are riveted.

Decks lids are different throughout the 1970 model year.  i think there are at least three different types.
