I agree it's not ideal running a Mono amp but I have a similar setup in my Mustang & it sounds fine..

I really appreciate the information and advice. its a little late for me to start changing things out and I am not real excited about putting in a sub into the trunk. I am going to try the adjustments and see how that turns out. I keep getting mission creep here and am not moving forward at the speed I would like.

Just for my own understanding, it seems you guys are saying that there are different types of amps; those for subwoofers and those for subs or speakers?

Not really, an amp is an amp, but normally a car stereo amp is 2 Channels (or more) and some of the 1 Ch amps are espesially made for subs, sometime they have built in filters that removes all but the lower frequencys. Thay can be used for regular speakers in mono also, if you bypass the filter section or set it so it sounds good,  like your'e doing.  I have a 5 Channel amp waiting to go in my Challenger, but no room for rear speakers  :(  . (Convertible)
