    Speaker troubles

    I took out the Clarion radio that a PO had put in and replaced it with a new one from Antique Automotive Radio. When I turn up the volume the sound goes all buzzy and non-descript. I believe this is called speaker distortion, is that correct? Does it mean I need higher watt speakers. The current speakers are also Clarion, 40W, but I can't get much volume before the sound goes wonky. Any recommendations on what to replace them with. I am running a two speaker system in the kick panels, no amp or other goodies.

    I just installed an am-fm radio from AAR also, and ran new speaker wire to my speakers that are all 40w or better capable. Mine dont sound great when you crank up the volume either, but not major distortion.
    Have you replaced your wires and not crossed them?

    Murray, take a peek at the speaker recommendations and ratings that came with your new radio.  Ensure  that the speaker impedance that is suggested matches your current speakers.   Generally, Impedance, expressed in ohms, is the resistance to the flow of alternating current in amplifiers and speakers. Impedance needs to be compatible between speaker and amplifier to prevent overheating or distortion. The ohms ratings will be marked on your speaker.  Are all the other functions of the radio working?

    Make sure you didn't wire the speakers backward so their pulling rather than pushing

    Obviously the AAR radios wont work with the original speakers, but you obviously have more modern speakers, and I assume they are of the compatible 6 ohm type. I agree it could be a blown speaker, or crossed wires.

    Is the radio rated for 4 ohm or 8 ohm speakers ? I believe most are moving away from 4 ohm up to 8 ohm now
     Did the speakers sound OK with the old radio ?
     The amp in the new radio could be distorting also .
