71 Cuda value?
« on: April 02, 2015 - 10:31:50 AM »
I am considering selling or trading my Cuda. I got to about 95% complete on the restoration in 2005 and have not driven it much or done anything else to it since then. It sits covered in the garage and looks almost as good as these pics taken then but I realize now it is an "old" restoration. Here is an add I placed on the local C-list site two years ago:

71 383 Cuda matching #’s (including trans). Purchased in 1993, meticulous restoration 95% complete in 2004 with approximately 500 miles since then. Broadcast sheet, tires 2 years old, TTI headers (ceramic) and pre bent exhaust, 355 cone posi, SS brake lines, perfect grille, straight lines, everything detailed, new or rebuilt. I know and will point out the few flaws this car has. Original parts were kept, receipts and documentation, lots of extra parts, trim, wheels… Restored for myself, not to sell but circumstances have changed.

I had a guy hot to buy it for $37k but my daughter convinced me to keep it. I think now I should have sold it. Not sure what the prices are doing now, what can I expect it to sell for?

Quick Sale = < $30K-$40K
Average sale = $40K-$50K
Harder sale = $50K-$60K
Never going to sell = $60K+

Matching #s car that looks that nice, I would start asking price low 60's, settle no less than 55ish.  Very nice car, the fact you have all the pld parts helps alot.  Good luck.   :2thumbs:

The little incorrect details done during the restoration will hold it back some from asking TOP dollar.

71's are really hot again, I would start mid-$60's as well, you never know....you can always come down and it's harder to go up :money:

I understand and I would be up front in my advertising about the changes that I made. While I was restoring it, I did not worry to much about making changes (younger, dumber), hopefully I did not hurt the value too much. For example: I was told that the tag indicates it came with a spoiler but when I bought it there was a luggage rack on it, so I put an after market spoiler on it. It was a column shift car and I put the slap stick in it. I put headers on it just because I wanted a car with headers.

I am curious as to what de-valuing items you see and if what I just mentioned would knock the price down even more. Thank you, I appreciate the input. Kevin

It's not really a matter of "de-valuing" the car, it's more a matter of limiting the potential buyers.
Here's what I've found....

Buyers that are willing to spend $50K plus of a car are looking for the best restored, most documented, best examples they can find for their money (investment). When options are added, or subtracted, colours are changed, or aftermarket items are added, these are all serious turn off's for the astute collectors, the guys with money.

Now on the other hand, there are people that want a 71 Cuda and could care less about matching numbers, documentation, added options, etc...These guys tend to have less funds to play with and are more suited to $30K-$40K range cars or even less....

Personally I restore my cars back to 100% original. If the next owner doesn't like the column shift, then he can change it. As far as your car is concerned, changing it to a floor console can may make it more attractive to most, but certainly NOT to the collector type buyer looking for his perfect car. :2cents:

Yes I have the exhaust manifolds. I also have the original heads untouched (by me at least) in the attic, the original 3rd member (I think they call it that?), a thumbwheel radio and I believe some sort of amplifier module that goes with it, the original rear springs, dash pad, gas tank... I have lots of other parts in the attic but I have not been up there in a while and have forgot about most of it. I also retrofitted a modern tach behind the factory face and one of those little hobby clock movements behind the original clock face but I believe I still have original untouched clock and old style tach up there too. I have lots of pictures, I will post some more tonight.

I have not looked at prices lately but was quite discouraged when they fell like they did some 7 or 8 years ago. What I am hearing now is very encouraging. Where would you market a car like this?

I've sold my last three cars fairly quickly on Cars-on-line.com . Don't be surprised to get interest from Over seas. My last 71 Cuda is now in Germany, and my V code Challenger went to Sweden.

If you have a asking price in mind, let me know I could ask around.

I could add it to my web site too if you like. http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/index.html

I have a "cars for sale" page  http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/ITEMS-FOR-SALE.html

Where yould you market a car like this.  Well, for local buyers Craigslist has come a long way . I have found people from all over the world search it ( just sold a car to a gentelman from Austria ) who was going to be in Florida this month. As Alan said, Cars on line is excellent. Personally I would not list a car on E Bay, just my  :2cents:

EBay is not the place to sell a car for sure, but you can't buy quicker or faster world wide exposure :2cents:
