Need help on a 46RH transmission
« on: March 23, 2015 - 09:38:36 AM »
My "other baby"...a 1992 Dakota with the magnum v8 --- the tranny went out yesterday.

While it is in getting redone, I was hoping to swap in a deeper capacity pan with a drain plug.

Well, the shop checked for me and they do not feel that a deeper pan will work due to how my exhaust crossover runs.

bummed out about that but I would like to at least get a pan wit ha plug in it.....anyone off hand know of where I can find one quickly?

Doman lists part #265-827 for the same trans but only down to 1998, not the 1992....it appears to be a deeper pan.......so it may not fit....talked to Dorman and they say they do not have any listing for a 1992.

The truck is on the lift and the transmission is coming out as we speak.

Thanks guys!

Well, looks like I wont be adding a deeper pan right now.

Just got the price tag back from the rebuilder.....

Seems that the friction material on the lockup convertor "came apart".....chunks got sent forward to the trans cooler in the rad and the outboard one......which restricted fluid flow....the fluid that did get through was contaminated with fiber bits......that led to major overheating and destruction in the trans.

-- torque convertor toast
- OD planet and sun gears shot
- Reverse drum shot
-roller clutch overheated
- piston housing overheated
- seperator plate is worn out (possibly just from high miles)

While he is in there he is replacing a bearing kit in the OD unit that is a revised part from when it was new......beefier/stronger apparantly.

Add fluids, master kit and labor and we hit $2150.

And thats not all.....he says the radiator trans cooler is a honeycomb type and cannot be flushed reliably.....so a new rad is $270 installed.

Add tax ....

$2585.

I am taking donations.  :money:

Well it sounds like the rebuilder knows what he's doing. On a positive note the pan on the 518 is much deeper than the 727 pan. Also the factory cooler lines are bigger. You should be good. Especially with a lockup convertor to help keep temps cool.
