On the righthand side of your picture at the top of the coupler, if you look real close, and feel along the inside you'll find a small 1/8" X 1/4" split pin. Remove that pin and the coupler will pull right off.

The steering column nut usually is a 3/4 size, sorry I don't know the thread size, maybe 1/2" fine  :dunno: but they did change the nut size through the years :2cents:

excellent, thanks anlauto!!

I thought that might have something to do with it, but I didn't want to start prying on parts.

I removed split pin and most every other component from column.
my next issue is how can I remove the shaft?
does the large pin press out of the column shaft, or can it remain?
it seems to slide all the way up to top but stop right before I am able to remove.
there seems to be a bell shape sleeve around shaft preventing it from being removable, at same time the bottom arm contacts the outer housing.
Also the lowest shroud mounts how?, I only find 1 allen screw but still was unable to disassemble any further.

any help ,see pics.
thanks

The large pin on the bottom of the shaft can stay put....The shaft pulls straight out the bottom :dunno:

That set screw should be the only thing holding that upper jacket on the shaft.

all right, so I finally got it all apart by hammering out the upper shaft out of the lower shaft section, there appears to be some sort of a slide joint, but it was rusted badly.
my question now is:

how do I remove the key cylinder from the housing?

Top righthand of your picture there is a screw in place, immediately to the left of the screw is a tiny hole...insert something small in the hole to depress the lock, then pull the complete ignition out....you may have to remove the key.

PM me your email address, I have a wicked PDF document that details the disassembly of a steering column.  It will answer all you questions.
