Let's see your useable spare tire set up!
« on: November 26, 2014 - 11:49:54 AM »
Working on my spare tire set up and am curious as to what people are using back there.

I looked into the Spacesaver set up but was pretty shocked by the steep prices and also...

-Could it even be used if need be?
-It's just a plain black steelie with a low profile bias-ply tire?

Found the steelie on YeanOne 15x7 5x4.5 w/ 4.5 back spacing - shipped to my door way up here for $166.22
or
A matching Rallye again from YearOne 15x7 5x4.5 w/ 4.5 back spacing - shipped to my door way up here for $180.17

For the difference of $12 I think I'm going with the Rallye.

What do you guys have that can be used in case you get a flat in the middle of no where?

I think someone had a thread about this a few years ago.  IIRC, they used a small spare from a Ford Crown Vic, or something like that.  It's large in diameter but thin like a mini spare.  I used to have an 82 Cordoba with a mini spare.  That would work too but I don't know what the diameter of it was.

Brads70? There's no way I found to search all threads he started :(

I used the search function a few different ways but nothing really came up.

I hear the Ford Ranger rims work as well.

Thanks for the link Katfish!

Here's the thread with Brad's donut idea, just scroll up.
Actually, it was 471_Magnum that started this ball rolling.

JayBee  got the link. Great idea. I think there are 2 different Crown Vic rims though? They both look similar but have different backspacing? I lucked out at a scrap yard and found one just laying on the ground so I have no idea what it's out of exactly? Definitely Ford though, it has the ford logo cast in it. You will need to machine out the center as Ford uses a slightly smaller hub. Not a big deal though.

I carry a can of fix a flat in my trunk, just in case.   :rebel:

That and my CAA card...not so much  :rebel:, but very useful when needed.

I figure running two different sized tires, the spar is not going to help to much.

Since I don' thave to worry about brake clearance, I picked up a used 15" steel wheel off a mid '70s Coronet from the salvage yard for $10. Put a used 235/60 I had lying around so I have a similar diameter spare.

I wouldn't recommend going much bigger than 235 in width because once you get it up on the riser in the trunk and try to stuff it up under the package tray, you run out of room pretty quickly. Even at an angle, a 255 could be a challenge to get in there, but each car is a bit different.

If you are running larger than 11.75" brake rotors, you will need to look at oversized rims for spares.

I am using a aluminum spare out of a 03-04 Cobra has enough back space to clear 13 " brakes with big calipers.. Best part is it fits behind my truck divider and only weighs 21 lbs
