Dave owner of ECS has a telescopic antenna on his 1970 Challenger.  Dave's car was awarded the highest score ever at the Mopar Nats OE Certifications. The Mopar restoration reproduction antenna for the 1970/71 Challenger is also telescopic.

What radio does that white car have ?

Does the radio option affect the antenna installed ? Say AM vs AM/FM ?

Not sure if the antenna changes with the type of radio. I believe that Dave's Challenger has an AM radio with 8 track.  I just checked the 1970/71 parts manual and when it comes to the 70/71 E bodies antenna mast they only list two. A 60" manual part # 2889919 and 76.5" manual part # 2889934. The fact that they call them manual I would think they are telescopic. :dunno: I just Googled both of these part numbers. 2889919 is definitely telescopic as I found an NOS one on Ebay. I couldn't find anything conclusive on 2889934 but indications are that it was also telescopic.

I am very sure that everything but a TA/AAR that had a radio/stereo came with a telescopic antenna mounted on the fender. The TA/AARs had a solid mast antenna mounted on the right rear quarter panel.

I thought it was the opposite as you described?  :dunno:   I installed a repop T/A  AAR rear antenna and it's telescopic?

well like all things in this hobby, I could be completely wrong; however I described it as I remember it being. Being wrong isn't a new experience for me, but I have to say that is the way I remember it. Let's see what others say.

I gave this a lot of thought last night and took a quick look at my stash of parts. I have the original antenna from my 70 Challenger and it is telescopic. The TA/AAR aspect I cannot confirm; I "thought" they had a solid mast for some reason but thinking back, I am pretty sure it was a telescopic just like the front mounted ones; while it is possible Chrysler sources a completely different antenna for that application, it is more likely they didn't.

Maybe telescopic is an option ? The one I removed from my front fender was solid and looked to be original?  :dunno:  My car was a low optioned /6 car if that factors into it at all?  :dunno:  I gave it to a buddy that's almost finished his 71 Challenger.

I have reviewed some reference material and found the following

Option A04 - Basic Radio Group, Avail 69-71
power brakes, front air foam front bench seat, LH outside remote chrome mirror, windshield wipers 3-speed variable, power windows, music master AM (or any of the following radios; deluxe AM, AM/FM, AM w/stereo 8 track player, search tune AM/FM, AM/FM multiplex-stereo, AM/FM multiplex-stereo w/8 track player) Power antenna, power steering, deluxe wheel covers (class 1 or class III)

also found A53 - TA/AAR which only says rear mounted antenna

there are 2 other codes; not sure if these codes were ever used on E bodies
R48 - power antenna
R45 - oversize antenna

there is mention of a telescopic and a fixed antenna but no codes.

You mean like the strip type or a power antenna in place of the original?

there are a lot of hidden antenna solutions out there I think. I bought one for my 52 Dodge PU from the local autozone but didn't use it due to space. that said, I think you could run something under the dash on the firewall or on the dash frame or even run something up one of the A pillers and put it under the headliner.
