Whistling at low speeds - Vacuum leak detection?
« on: June 08, 2015 - 12:49:43 PM »
Hello Mopar buddies!

My cuda has a loud whistle at low speeds.  I imagine I have a vacuum leak somewhere as higher speeds require less oomph from the vacuum system.   How the heck do I go about ferreting this out?

I'm running a 750 Edelbrock on the 383 stock motor (not original).

For what it is worth - I have an original brake booster and spongy brakes that I haven't gone through yet (on the (long) short-list.

answered your own question, probably the booster. pull the hose and cap it. whistling goes away, found the problem. If that's not the problem, check any other vacuum hoses, for good connections, cracks, etc. Use carb cleaner or an unlit propane torch around intake and carb base, if idle picks up noticeably you have found the leak. my money is on the booster or cracked check valve where the vacum line connects to booster. good luck!

Hopefully it's not the dreaded "E-body whistle".

could be a leak between the carb & Intake as the one corner of the intake is left open under the base so that is another place to look for the problem , you may need a spacer to seal it up

I had never heard of this -  I googled it and there are hundreds of links on this.  WOW!

I have so many air leaks around the side glass, I couldn't hear a whistle if there was one.
