MSD coils
« on: April 05, 2015 - 09:45:05 PM »
Anyone using the G3 2006 and newer MSD twin plug coil packs?
Id like to know if i can use these on a 2004 hemi. I  would think the only difference is the electrical  plug?

Is it a truck motor?  Cuz if I'm not mistaken, the pre-06 truck motors used a coil that fed 1 cylinder on each bank, the one directly underneath it, and one directly opposite it on the other bank, soy thought would be that the computer would tell it to fire differently?  I'm not sure

Yes, it is exactly as described, 2004 truck 5.7.
I'm wasn't sure if it fired the two plugs at the same time?
The newer coil packs just make for a cleaner install.

They were set up to fire 1 plug on the compression stroke, the opposite bank plug on exhaust stroke. Emmisions. They later found it was useless and eliminated it.

That is exactly what I thought.
So I don't see any reason Why I couldn't adapt the newer coil to an older motor Just by changing the electrical connector. I'd just have stronger spark/cleaner burn?
Thoughts???

When I converted a 5.7 from EFI to dual quads we used the shorty plug wires so each coil fired the same 2 plugs in each cylinder. However we had to use an MSD controller to fire the coils for timing reasons. The kit came with cam and crank sensors, the wiring harness and ecm. About 1400 bucks.

We had the laptop hooked up to the MSD box, total timing was 35 degrees @ 3000 rpm. Base timing was jumping all over the place based on the readings the ecm was getting from the MAP sensor. I replaced the MAP with a new one, had the same results. However it doesn't effect performance, idles smoothly, and has way more power.

Yes, but it only fires one plug.

They both fire 2 plugs, the 03-05 style you would use the shorty plug wires.

Yes, but the 06 and new would make for a cleaner install. I think all I need to do is change the electrical connector.

You would need to convert the harness and change valve covers to the new style
