How much oil can leak from a distributor?
« on: May 30, 2015 - 01:00:21 PM »
I have been chasing an oil leak for quite some time.

I threw on a new intake gasket thinking that was the issue and a new distributor gasket but I'm still leaking just as much as before the repair. I have mine ripped appart again and I'm just not convinced it's the intake gasket.

I replaced the rear main seal last year thinking that was the issue. But the oil is leaking from the area where the sending unit , disto and intake meet.

About 2 table spoons of oil hit the floor after I shut it off and while driving a drip hits the long tube exhaust manifold.

Can this be caused by a crappy disto o ring? Is there a gasket for the sending unit? Or just some Teflon? Can that much oil leak from a distributor?

My bet is it is the sending unit causing the problem , I chased a similar problem years ago & it was a split in the fitting to the oil gauge .
It could be just the threads requiring teflon tape or liquid sealer or it could be coming through the sending unit requiring a new one .

I'll throw this curve ball in there. I have a mechanical guage so it was just a adapter attached to a friction fitting attached to a plastic line. I'm thinking this is the issue since there is no sending unit.

what do you mean, "friction fitting"? it should be a feral type connection. Lose the plastic hose and replace it with copper tubing. much safer. reseal the fitting in the block with Teflon. completely clean the area with brake cleaner, and then look for your leak. you can also put dye in your oil to help find the leak. doubt it is coming from the distributor.

:2cents: The brass ferrule has nicked the plastic tubing for the gauge... had same thing happen... local hardware store has new compression fittings, and I was able to redo the seal... the copper tubing is best, but I still have the plastic tubing, and no new leaks for two years...

I am getting rid of the mechanical guage as a whole and going to an autometer electric one. Cleaned out the whole thre some Teflon on the new one and snugged it back in.

I'm also re doing the o ring and distributor I guess if it leaks next year I can take it all appart again and re-do the intake gasket.
