Couple brake questions!
« on: August 09, 2016 - 08:35:01 AM »
I posted a while back about my husband and I doing a brake install from scratch for our 1971 Barracuda. Well we got sidetracked on other things (mainly rebuilding the engine) and are now revisiting the brake system. So I have a couple questions to add to the awesome info I got on my last post. Just a reminder: we have disc brakes up front and drums in rear. We also have a power booster system to bolt to MC. No plans to change this setup. We ordered all hard lines from Inline Tube because fuel system went so smoothly this way.

1) The valve situation: do we use a combination proportioning/metering/distribution valve as came stock or do we use separate prop / distr valves because of our disc front drum rear setup?

2) There are tons of valves out there. Which one is right for us? Who makes the best?

3) Does anyone have inside and engine bay pics of power booster/MC installed? I saw one in previous post when I searched but it was from a distance so hard to see detail.

Thanks once again for all your time!

Here are some pics (70 Challenger- front disc, rear drum brakes) the extra vacuum line coming off the booster is not stock. Hope it helps.

This combo here^... BUY THE PRE BENT LINES from anybody.  I had luck with Fine Lines but you have to be sure they know EXACTLY which ones to send you.

Excellent thanks so much! Pics help and so does the link. We went with Inline Tube and just got all our lines. One last question though, I am going to attach picture of our MC and power booster. Ours looks diff and not sure if it will work or not. Does anyone know what this goes to and if it will work?

thats the large size diaphragm ... like on a hemi or a heavy big block B body.  You can reference the ramman on youtube and he gives a long lesson on the benefits of the multi-diaprhagm bendix booster.   I believe the valve remains unchanged for that large unit.... just increases pressure.

What that is is a Chinese POS sold by many vendors...... I've replaced quite a few, three on one car before I was able the convince the owner to put a OE unit on......

My recommendation   http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=259148&cc=1078444&jsn=540

Be aware if you go with the OE booster you'll need more parts...

So we shouldn't use the one that came with the car? Pictured above?

I used the Cardone unit in my car and it stops.  You may end up investigating the larger caliper / disc setup in the front - EG cordoba front brake setup.   I haven't bought that yet but am thinking about it - again - theramman sells the larger caliper bracket (for $300!!!! yikes) and you can buy a 11.75 disc brake for a cordoba.

It depends what parts you have but Dr Diff has the caliper adapters for the larger 11" Cordoba rotors , if you are replacing parts with new ones anyway there is no reason not to go to the larger rotors , the other catch is you must have 15" or bigger rims to clear the calipers if you do this .
You can use the factory / repro proportioning valve or you can use the 5 line Wilwood adjustable . often the repro & factory ones do not work properly , the Willwood is a better solution but will not look factory

Okay, so get a new booster. Thanks for that. Now, so we need a prop/metering valve combo in engine bay that runs from the MC. Then a distribution block at the rear axle - correct??

One last thing - can anyone supply pics (close up) of their pedal assembly and how it all connects to booster and cables etc?

yes you need the Prop / metering block if you want to go that route
the Dist block is part of the hose & a breather bolt holds it to the rear diff
