"Correct" throttle cable hook-up to gas pedal

Ok - Just bought this beast and got it home to notice that the dang gas pedal has a piece of the carpet flipped under the pedal to get the pedal height correct.   So I tucked it back under and noticed that the pedal is not under tension.

How the heck do I get the pedal under tension?   I felt the back of the gas pedal and there is a plastic piece with a small opening but can't imagine how that fits into the equation given the suaged end of the cable sticks out past the front of the pedal face by 3 inches.
HELP?

If you are using a factory intake, carb, throttle cable and throttle bracket it should be easy.  Have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor.  Loosen the throttle cable clamp and hold the carb at WOT.  Then lock down the cable.  If you are using a taller aftermarket intake and a non stock carb, you may have to modify the throttle bracket.  I think Mancini Racing sells an adjustable throttle bracket for use with tall intakes.  You can't use that bracket with stock kickdown linkage though.

I modified a 2-barrel throttle bracket for use on my Dart.  I had someone hold the gas pedal to the floor while I held the carb at WOT.  I measured how much I had to lengthen the throttle bracket so the cable would bolt up.  I think I had to add more than 2" to the bracket to get everything lined up right.

i'll have to take a photo of the pedal assembly.   Right now the dang cable extends 2-3 inches beyond the face of the pedal... i'm beginning to thing the thing was crimped at the base and the crimp fell off.  i'll have to figure it out.  Probably ensure the thing is swagged tighter to the pedal.

So when I started taking photos of the setup -  I noticed that the throttle was stuck wide open.  This was causing the play in the pedals.   

Soooo I guess I should probably purchase new springs as the ones I have are probably old or do you suppose I should just grease the linkages (carb cleaner etc)   Thoughts?

Every instance of sticking carb I've experienced was solved by loosening the 4-bolts that hold it to the intake, work the linkage as you lightly re-tighten...

 Be sure the throttle blades are not binding in the gasket also .
Make sure you have good throttle return springs , minimum of 2 if one breaks .
 the housing can be adjusted away from the carb in the slide so moving the cable housing away will increase the pedal travel , you want to be sure the throttle is wide open with the pedal on the floor !

Shoot... anybody have experience with Weber Carbs?    Replace with what if it sucks? I'm a simple guy that likes to cruise only.    No crazy performance needed.   AKA a 323 rearend gear kinda guy hahaha.   With an Automatic to boot.

I can clearly see in your picture that the cable housing is all or most of the way forward , so there is a 7/16 nut on the bracket , slide the housing as far back as possible without opening the carb .
 The Weber carb is a Edelbrock copy of the old AFB Carter carb , these are one of the worst carbs available,[ probably the 1406]  , the original AVS is what Mopar originally used , Edelbrock also copies that carb as the Thunder series , the AFB is one of the least tunable carbs available , but will usually get the car around under its own power  , the Thunder carbs are somewhat better .

I'm not married to this Weber POS -   I just paid a ton of money for the car so what is a few hundred dollars more right LOL... what would you suggest?

I would use a Proform , Holley HP or Quickfuel , you can work with what you have & see if it meets your needs at least until you get it mostly sorted out .

Turns out that I have a 1407 Edelbrock with a sticky choke.   Further complicating was that the throttle return spring is broken actually... I repaired it but the throttle return is not tight enough.

Should I go ahead and just re-bend the old spring and try to get a tighter recoil?   Mannn.  If anybody is in southern California and has some time - I would love the help!

Get new springs , never run with just one spring either so that when 1 breaks the throttle will still close !
 The Carb well .... your call
