I'll check the timing, go with a 25/75 water/coolant mix and look for a better air cleaner assembly. Thanks.

75% water and 25% coolant.  :2cents:

Water transfers heat better than prestone etc, the coolant is for freezing and corrosion.

You may want to try 66% water and 33% antifreeze mix. It will give you -17 deg F and a good heat transfer. Is the aluminum radiator bare or has it been painted?

I do not see the coolant mix solving your problem + with too much water in there it may freeze & kill the block , less than 60% in an unheated garage was likely t freeze & split the block in AB

Unpainted radiator. May move the trans cooler forward from off the radiator too. 60 water/40 coolant mix. I'm getting there!

Distilled water would be best. Using less antifreeze and more water will decrease the specific gravity (density) of the mix and increase its heat transfer capability. But on the downside as CP points out, you lose freeze protection and lowers the boiling point, so be certain to adjust the mix for the season or drain completely for storage. Better to be safe here. The aluminum cylinder heads transfer more combustion heat into the coolant than the cast iron factory heads did, so there is more heat load into the cooling system that must be transferred to the air via the radiator. Therefore the radiator will need as much help with airflow as possible. Also proper coolant circulation is important. Pulley ratios, water pump impeller clearence etc. should be checked as posted earlier. I had a customer a few years ago that had a similar over heat problem. It turned out that he painted the aluminum radiator so well it insulated it enough and ran hot at low speed. Good luck in finding the cure!

you also lose corrosion protection
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"
