California Title Law ?
« on: June 06, 2015 - 01:03:55 PM »
I'm in eastern Or and I'm looking at a '70 Roadrunner with an odd story.

This car was sold new in CA and moved to OR about 10 years ago.   the original owners son now owns the car and wants to sell it but the family has no paperwork whatsoever.  the father is dead now.  the car has been raced much of it's life but is in pretty solid original condition.  he says the car was never driven on the street so it was never licensed in CA.  I find that hard to believe .

The OR DMV says there's nothing they can do I have to look to CA.  anyone know if CA has records back that far?  how would you go about dealing with this ?   the widow is not in condition to deal with it and the son never gets anything done.  if I want to buy it it's up to me I'm sure.  It can be restored I hate to part it out.

Years ago I bought a Duster with no miles on it , fully caged & tubbed , I got the original registration for it showing that it had only been licenced in 71 ! Iy had 7 layers of paint on it & was used solely as a race car all of its life .
None of this helps you one bit though , just a cool similar story

That's what the son says his dad bought this car for, but since all the glass and the original dash and air grabber hood is still on the car I doubt it.

But it is possible.

California won't have a record of it if it's been more than 15 years since its been registered there.  At least that's what it used to be, when I was pulling title info for my uncles old lincoln

That's what I feared.  so is there a way to get a new title for it?  seems if there is no record I'd be just as well to do it in OR where there is no record but I don't think I can.

It would be nice to talk to the CA DMV but I can't find a phone number for this dept.

Yeah u can get a title for it, each state is different, just call your local dmv and they will tell u the steps you need to take.  When I did it with my chally, I needed a certified letter from the previous owner explaining why he didn't have a title, along with an application for title, etc.

There are title companies out there that can get a title as long as the Vin # is there.
Do a search for title company and they pop up.
Make sure you do a vin search to make sure it dosent pop up as stolen.

Thanks guys , I'm going to go have a closer look Tuesday and I'll get the VIN and whatever the family can give me for info to go on.

If I don't do it I don't think the family ever will.

Haddix,  thanks for that contact info Donna is on it.  I don't know what she'll find but it's obvious she knows what to do.

I bought the car as is, I hope to get a title but for what I paid it's hard to get hurt.

No problem. You don't happen to have any parts for a 69 roadrunner? We need a drivers door. Are you coming down to ca? I'm around Sacramento if you end up needing a place to leave a trailer overnight

I see doors all the time in Portland on craigslist.  but I don't have any sorry.

I hope I don't have to bring it down for inspection,  it's in Bend about 30 miles from me so I hope it can all be taken care of through the mail.

I live in Oregon and am going through a similar process for a car that I have been dealing with for 3 months. I finally talked to someone at the local DMV and she gave me a blue form to fill out, it's called Certification of Ownership Facts ORS 803.045. So basically you're treating the car as if it has a lost title.

i drove from my home to Yreka California DMV  (50 miles) because I thought it was last registered in CA but it wasn't, and let me tell you after sitting in line for two hours I will never complain about the Oregon DMV again. And getiing anyone to help you over the phone is impossible.
