I've got a '70 as well and was just decoding my fender tags for more information.  I think that your question on the black striping refers to the V5X code, which some sites call it black striping and some call it "Black Mouldings - Protective Insert Body Side". 

That makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the wisdom!

Looks like a fun project.  My wife and I moved from Waikaloa to Florida.  Rust is a problem In Hawaii, but it is just as bad here.

Installed a powermaster one-wire alternator (17519) a couple weekends ago. It was not a straight bolt-in, as expected. Luckily, I had enough brackets and sleeves on my donor motor to get in in alignment. Ran an 8GA charge wire to the battery. Charge tester says it's working, so I'm calling it a success.

I now also have turn signals, brake lights, and parking lights. Horn works, too.

So this past weekend after changing the spark plugs, I took a test ride to the end of the street. Rubber banded the iPhone to the rearview mirror. Witness the world through a cracked windshield, to the soundtrack of a Diet Dr. Pepper can-sleeved exhaust leak, as a Challenger sees second gear for the first time in a long, long time.
