piston recommendation for 70 340 being bored 0.030 over?
« on: June 04, 2015 - 10:16:17 PM »
My 70 340 small block is getting refreshed at a local machine shop.   Part of the work will involve boring the cylinders 0.030 over, which means I'll need new pistons.   This will be a sunny daily driver with stock heads, intakes and exhaust manifolds.... nothing exotic.   What brand(s) would you recommend for replacement pistons and rings?

The original 340's had forged pistons, but if this is, as you say, a sunny day, don't beat on it car, then cast pistons or hypereutectics would probably be just fine. Keith Black and TRW/Speed Pro offer reasonably priced, coated versions. Standard rings were 5/64" but there many .043 or 1/16" ring sets out there. Speak to the piston manufacturers for their recommendation, but I'd run a plasma moly ring set with a reversed Napier second ring myself. Again, speak to them regarding their ideas of ring gaps. Your machine shop should also be able to give you some recommendations as well. Ebay may be your friend in this quest. Good luck

For the price difference I would choose a Forged piston over Hyper or cast thus allows for increased performance later without rebuilding again too.
Speed Pro will have a production 10:1 piston available but they are heavy , Diamond has a lot of good Mopar pistons , SRP,  Probe . these wil generally be lighter .
You may want to seriously consider a 408 stroker pkg also , the cost of a stroker kit will be close to the cost of replacing all the parts & reworking the crank & rods.

Keith Black and TRW/Speed Pro offer reasonably priced, coated versions. Standard

The folks at the machine shop also recommended the Speed Pro pistons, so that's what has been ordered.

CP - I looked into the stroker kit, but have decided against it as I'm trying to minimize changes to the block.  Besides, more displacement = more temptation for pedal stomping.

I just rebuilt my 340, got .060 Speed Pro forged pistons and plasma-moly rings. I had the same piston before the rebuild, but .030, then engine was running great with those. I got a mild cam, and stock heads also. Edelbrock intake and TTI shorty headers.
