Cast Cranks?
« on: June 15, 2015 - 11:28:21 AM »
I just bought a project car with a '75 440 in it so I assume it's a cast crank.   I have a '70 440 HP block I plan on turning into a six pack for it.

If the cast crank is good should I use it or find a steel one?   I'm not going to cheap out on a crank but if cast will work I'd use it.

It should be cheap to pick up a steel crank with all the strokers being built or build a stroker yourself .
With a 4 spd I would avoid the cast crank anyway , the cast crank is external balance & you would need to balance the whole assy , crank rods pistons damper & flywheel or add weight to internally balance it

Okay that's kind of what I thought.

Is there an easy way to tell cast from steel when it's still in the engine?

Then the one I have is steel.  I wonder if it has the 6 pack rods too?  it's a 1975 HP  stamp.

I need to get it out and pull it apart maybe it's not junk.

True but can you guarantee it is the correct and original damper. Being a 75 it is a good chance it came with cast. My 68 steel crank was covered in forging burrs, some real sharp, whereby a cast crank has reasonably smooth counterweights with sand casting marks. Fairly easy to tell when it is on the bench.

I'm having a hard time finding a good forged crank for my 440. So much so I'm leaning toward a 512 stroker. I'm told locally that a new 440 crank will be about $900. The stroker kit is about $2100. So I'm almost halfway to price of the stroker with just the crank. :eek4:

My 76 440 is marked HP as well but has a cast crank.
