8-3/4 with axle adjusters on both sides/no locking tabs???
« on: July 18, 2015 - 12:49:10 PM »
This is an 8-3/4 rear with oem tapered bearings. From what i have read so far there is only one adjuster on the right/passenger side. This car has adjusters on both axles and no locking tabs. Took pictures of housing ends not sure if they are stock? Can this axle bearing setp be after market/fabbed? Or did someone not know what they were doing? any suggestions? Maybe just need to put a fixed flange on and check everything out.
Also included pictures of passenger axle end, splines look worn near end, slipped in carrier? It's hard to tell from picture. Should this axle be replaced or is it OK for normal driving, occasional romp?  Thanks Jim

Somebody probably just slammed a right side axle into the left side. You need locks for sure. I would look for a better axle that hopefully is from the left side.

Agreed... Housing ends are stock, two right side axles, replace the marginal one hopefully with a left side axle... Put a lock on the adjuster....

As much as I dislike the green bearing this could be their big seller point, you don't need to know how to properly set up mopar axle end play...

I'm near Brentwood, CA. 55 miles east of SF. This rear end is turning into a total rebuild. It started with a sticky rear caliper that melted axle bearing grease out all over the brake pads. Well the pinion seal looked like it was weeping just getting the bottom of the carrier wet, no drips. So.....figured I got it started, might as well take the carrier out and change the pinion seal, found out that's a bit of work with a 489 case. Good thing I did, the bearings are showing what timken calls contamination (dirty oil) and after checking backlash and contact pattern something defintly was going on. For backlash I got .014 then .001 depending where I checked. If I smacked the pinion towards the case I could get .007 to .009 everywhere I checked. I don't think that's part of checking backlash! Always stayed away from rear, ends, someone else said it best there's magic or a rabid hamster in there. Well I'm in it now.......after I break it 2 or 3 times then I'll have someone else fix it!
Thanks everyone Jim
