360 head swap?
« on: June 19, 2015 - 09:49:25 PM »
Hello I've got a question for the experts! I've got a 1974 barracuda with a 360 in it and I'm wondering if I can swap heads from a 1979 360 onto it? They look the same to me except the chamber size and the addition of some coolant ports?

Here's why I want to do this! I purchased the 74 360 freshly rebuilt and it has high compression pistons and the heads were milled at least .050! I can only run this thing on race fuel and due to that I never drive it! The past weekend I took it out and blew a head gasket so I tore the heads off (#3671587-5 heads) and figured I will put a set of low compression 79 360 heads on (#4071051) I'm hoping this will bring the compression down to a reasonable level?!? Will they interchange? Any info would be awesome!!!

Yes they will bolt on , any LA series heads will swap from 68 -92 ,
to my knowledge both should have the same 66cc chambers though unless the heads on the engine were milled at some point in which case you may have trouble with manifold fitment

Ok good I will put on my 79 heads and see what happens! The factory intake on the 74 had been milled to Match the milled heads so I will pick up a new intake to put on the stock 79ers! Thanks!!!
