New radiator needed after boring 340 0.030 over?
« on: June 16, 2015 - 06:42:58 PM »
I was talking with a someone at work about getting my engine refreshed including getting it bored 0.030 over.  He mentioned that I may need to get an aluminum radiator to avoid heat build up.  I have the original stock 26" radiator which appear to be in good shape (tubes that I can see look clear) Stock cam, intake and water pump and a/c.  No cooling problems obvious when I ran the engine before pulling it.  I live in Buffalo, so we don't see many days above 80F.

I know I won't know for sure until I actually drive it,  it but if boring involves a big leap in heat I'd rather take care of it now.  Thoughts?

I have a 340 bored .060 over with a lunati cam and stock 26" rad. Cool as a cucumber. If my math is correct boring .030 will only increase your CI by 1.3%

Yep, what the man said! Think about it- if that were the case, you'd need bigger rads for every step up from 273 to 318 to 340 to 360- not to mention the 408 and 416 strokers out there. Your workmate might be good at fixing the photocopier, but he needs a bit more seasoning when it comes to engines in my useless opinion.

I agree, if you didn't have issues before, you shouldn't now. Old school thinking, (how old is your co worker?) was thinner cylinder walls, from boring, makes your motor run hotter. If you are not raising compression, and increasing HP, you should not see any difference.  :2cents:

Don't need to do anything to that radiator.

Unless you went wild on the cam, bumped up the compression and/or added twin turbos the to your ride.

if drive in 90 plus heat, I'd get an aluminum.

The 26" rad is fine.If it needs repair in the future you can always re-core it with an extra row.
