Buying a Mopar without a fender tag?!
« on: June 24, 2015 - 09:14:37 PM »
There's a charger for sale without a fender tag near me.  It's supposed to be numbers matching and body is good but it's missing the fender tag.

What do you all think about this?  Should I stay away from it?  What do the numbers match exactly?

I'm new to these cars so thanks for bearing with me!

There are all sorts of numbers that can match, and did match when the car was new. The VIN tag on the dash, the fender tag, the motor and the trans, the radiator support, and in some instances the trunk lip can all have the VIN or parts of it recorded.

I think the original idea was that, if a car had all the numbers matching, it probably had been well-treated. A car in an accident might have had the radiator support replaced, and a car that was hot-rodded might have blown the original engine. Whatever the original idea, car collectors took up this idea that a car has greater value if all it's numbers still match.

So, short form, if you're a collector, it's a big deal, and in that case, especially in the car supposedly has a bunch of rare options or combos that could only be proved by the fender tag, I'd avoid it. I personally am a driver, and to me the rare original and the clone both drive the same, so if it was a car I wanted, and all other factors were equal, I'd buy it.

Same here, couldn't care less about the fender tag.
Love the guys that come up and try to look at my VIN (I always keep a towel on the dash) and fender tag (it's from a 72 Challenger).

Actually had a fool come up to my car while I was listening to the announcer at a show and took a picture of my tag.

Wasn't happy about it and by the time I got back to the Cuda he slinked away.

Just wondering when I'll see a duplicate tag......

Just make sure you adjust the price you pay for a car without a tag.  :2cents:

I bought my 71 'Cuda missing the fender tag. Didn't really matter to me I'm not going to restore it "as built" anyway. IF the car was all matching numbers with all original equipment it would be worth more IF it was for sale. It has the correct engine (again not numbers matching) and everything else "looks" like original equipment. Close enough for me I bought it.

It can be used as a leverage tool to negotiate a lower price on the car.

Ok thanks for the replies, this is helpful info to know.  It would be nice if I could get the price lower however I don't think it's possible.  The car is a project and needs work, sometimes I think digging deeper into my pocket is better than restoration.  Supply & demand is a sob sometimes!

I agree the tag is nice to have but not necessary.  What will the engine numbers match to the car?  I know the numbers may match the transmission but where on the car will I find the same number?

The motor and transmission will have numbers that match the last six digits of your vin tag.
If you can find a build sheet in the car you can have a fender tag reproduced according to the build sheet.

I am not really a "collector" , but I prefer to buy cars that have their fender tag.  This fender tag will demand just a little more coin.  Definitely use the missing fender tag as a tool for dropping the price.

My first Cuda had no fender tag, just wanted to drive a bad ars car.  now that I have that out of my system I prefer to only buy cars with some kind of documentation.
