1 finger of 3 finger pressure plate bad?
« on: June 25, 2015 - 05:56:36 PM »
So a little back story.

4 speed 833 behind a fairly torquey stroker motor.
I have had this drivetrain together about 5 or 6 years and have put it through everything from street cruise
to a few 1/4 mile blasts.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't drive it "spirited" at times when no one else is around.

The clutch and pressure plate were used and I got from Mopar Al when he sold me the motor.

So while not a ton of street miles, they have kind of been like dog years, especially since I've had it.

While testing my E85 conversion I had noticed my trans giving me a little grief going in reverse and my 1 to 2 shift,
much like I needed a little more clutch pedal travel to fully disengage.
Nothing tragic, just some minor grinding and stubbornness.

So I adjust a little more throw and call it a day.

A couple of days latter I get the same thing, and go through the process again.
Now I feel silly because I just drop under the car and 9/16 wrench and me add more travel without
doing any fact checking.

We go for a blast again a few days latter and now it's giving me lots of grief.
Like can't get it into 1st at a stop light bad.
I'm not far from home and even closer to Mom's, but 1st things 1st, get out of the street.

That's when I push into a parking lot and realize the clutch is on all the time, pedal be damned.
The clutch pedal still has a good "feel" and I don't get it.

Get under the car after nursing her to Mom's and the clutch linkage all looks OK.
I start looking at the clutch/flywheel/throwout bearing and 1 of the fingers of my 3 finger B&B pressure plate is not against the
throwout bearing like the other 2.

So I will be pulling the trans this weekend, but I'm not sure of what to make of this.
Anybody hear of a finger giving up like this?
It's either a Ram or McLeod, I'm thinking Ram, so it's not a weak or junk PP.
Did I possibly adjust SO much throw I "collapsed" a finger for lack of better description?

Just kind of curious if this has happened before or if odds are good I'm an idiot with a wrench.

Thanks for the input!

I'll be willing to bet that its a McLeod and you ain't the Lone Ranger !!

Last year I had an issue exactly like you and someone else did also. Good news .... McLeod will resurface it and fix it. Bad news... You pay to ship it too them which is almost the same expense of buying a new one. I replaced mine with a Ram diaphragm that has a little more pressure and love it.

the pivot adjustment may have come loose to , obviously there is a problem with the Pressure plate , I have been using McLeod exclusively but there have been some issues

I guess that helps answer the "what happened" somewhat.

I'll get it apart and let you guys know what I find.
It's kind of a bummer after getting my shifter sorted out now this.
I guess if it was easy everyone would be doing it  :P

I found you problem , you have rocks in your clutch !!  :smilielol:
The cracked finger would also contribute to the issue ......
