I realized I have a direct power line from the battery to the msd unit.  Wouldn't this provide a consistent voltage?

They don't mention the need for the regulator to have a good ground as well as + signal through the wiring, bad connections can create issues here as well

If I put the distributor in off by one notch would the car run and would it run bad.  I adjusted the timing with a light at 36 degrees all in at 3000 rpm.  The motor seemed to smooth out but then I let it sit over night and it's sputtering sounds like it's missing.  Confused.

Nope 36-degrees is it no matter if the drive gear is off or not.   So it runs good one day then bad the next without any changes..
Could the choke not be opening completely early enough?

MSD has 2 power leads , one is 12 ga from the batter the second is small 18 ga switched from the ballast resister connections it just closes the relay & shunts power from the battery when the key is on

So it could be the smaller one from the ballast resistor wires.

They were brand new when I started.  Better pull a couple and take a look.  They could have fouled by now.  I like where you are going with this.

Plugs were black and smelled of gas.  So I got a new set and thought I would replace them and check all the plug wires one more time as I replaced them.  Should I set the spark plug gap as .35 or higher.  MSD litature says it should be around .50 for 10.5:1  compression.  Mine is a 522 stroker with 10:1 compression.  Also how do I check the voltage at the small 18ga wire.  I am just looking for it to be 12 volts.  What about amps?

Think i already answered this but I usually set gaps to 0.045".

Measure the voltage with your meter. Don't worry about amperage
